Hong Kong University Offers Best MBA Programme in the World

A master of business administration course organised jointly with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has topped an international table of business schools for the second year in a row.

The rankings take into account factors such as student diversity, research capability and the average annual salary achieved by graduates within three years.

HKUST's programme came top among the 100 schools in the last factor. Its graduates earn an average of US$392,076 a year within three years.

Graduates enjoy a 69 per cent pay rise on their pre-EMBA salaries.

Chinese University jumped from 19th place last year to 10th this year.

The Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA Programme, jointly offered by the university and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, Chicago, was named No1 in the latest rankings of the world's top 100 executive MBA programmes by the Financial Times. The course, which joined the rankings in 2003, was also No1 last year and in 2007.

It came higher than the prestigious London Business School, whose joint executive MBA with Columbia University, New York, was No2 this year.

The HKUST programme came second in three areas - work experience of students, how international the student body is and the extent to which graduates felt they achieved their study aims. Programme head Judy Au Man-yee said one of the strengths of the programme was the plentiful exchange opportunities it offered.

"We are the only partner Kellogg has in Asia, but it offers joint programmes in places including Tel Aviv in Israel, Canada and Germany. We sponsor exchanges to Chicago and two other places of students' preference. Students can build up extensive international networks through the exchanges."

Au said the cost of the programme would rise by 15 per cent next year.

"Tuition fees will rise from HK$840,000 now to HK$970,000 next year," she said.

The director of Chinese University's EMBA programme, Andrew Chan, said the university was pleased with its rise in ranking.

"The programme's graduates achieved a high salary increase rate of 64 per cent [over the pre-EMBA pay levels]," he said.

"To enable students to interact with senior executives in different parts of the world, we'll continue to organise more global study trips," he said. "In June this year, the students completed a global study programme at Berkeley."

100 years Chinese in the Netherlands

In the next months, the Chinese community in the Netherlands will be celebrating the centennial of the settlement of the first Chinese in Holland.
These first settlers were sailors who served on ships bound for Dutch ports and who decided to stay. They found accomodation in lodgings that were run by Chinese near the port. These lodgings became the seeds of the China towns of Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Over the years the canteens of the lodgings became Chinese restaurants and gradually Dutch customers found their way to these establishments as well. A new phenomenon was born in the Netherlands: the Chinese restaurant.

At present there are some 90,000 Chinese in the Netherlands. More than two-thirds of them hail from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland. About 15,000 Chinese in the Netherlands came from Indonesia. A much smaller group came from Surinam, Vietnam, Singaport, Malaysia and Taiwan.
Today Chinese Dutch(wo)men are represented in all professions of the Dutch economy: from restaurant and shop owner to surgeon, from designer to entrepreneur, from housewife to professor and from soldier to senator.

To coordinate the celebration of 100 Years Chinese in the Netherlands, a foundation was established with the same name. The Netherlands Hong Kong Society will keep you informed about the activities of this foundation during the anniversary year. Please check the events agenda for news regularly.

Victor Fung: "Mainland China sales vital to Hong Kong"

Hong Kong's competitiveness hinges on local companies adapting their experience in wholesaling and distribution in Western countries to tap the mainland's domestic market, says Victor Fung, the chairman of a high-level think tank on integration between the city and the mainland.

Victor Fung Kwok-king, chairman of the Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council, said in the light of the mainland's fast-growing domestic market, Hong Kong firms should gradually shift their focus away from exporting products manufactured on the mainland to overseas counties and towards extending their distribution networks north of the border.

The council has put forward a series of proposals regarding further economic integration between Hong Kong and the mainland in a report on the city's role in the nation's economic development, which was released last week.
