AIG Raises $17.8 Billion in Record Hong Kong Offering

American International Group Inc. raised a record HK$138.3 billion ($17.8 billion) in the Hong Kong initial public offering of its main Asian unit, putting the bailed-out insurer on course to repay its U.S. assistance.AIG sold 7.03 billion shares in AIA Group Ltd., or a 58 percent stake, at HK$19.68 each, the New York-based insurer said today in a filing. That makes it the largest Hong Kong public offering, exceeding the $16 billion raised by Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd. in 2006, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The AIA shares may begin trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Oct. 29, AIG said.Chief Executive Officer Robert Benmosche, 66, has said the divestment of AIA and another non-U.S. division will put AIG “well within striking distance” of repaying a Federal Reserve credit line included in the company’s $182.3 billion U.S. bailout. AIG turned to the public offering following the June collapse of a $35.5 billion deal to sell AIA to Prudential Plc after the London-based firm’s investors balked at the price.“The IPO is the biggest money in the door for AIG and the U.S., without question,” said Clark Troy, senior analyst at Aite Group in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. “Success on this sale is the biggest step towards a government exit.”

Zimmerman, a Dutchman who has lived in Hong Kong for almost 30 years but who has far from fluent Cantonese, won the Southern District by-election on Sunday. But rather than seeing it as a new dawn for foreign residents with political aspirations in the city, Zimmerman, who is a Civic Party member and veteran conservation activist, said it was really a victory for reason because people increasingly wanted a better living environment.

New York, USA, 8 October 2009 – The world’s largest economies took the biggest hit in the World Economic Forum’s second annual Financial Development Report released today. Global financial centres still lead in the report’s Index, but the effects of financial instability have pulled down their scores compared to last year. The United Kingdom, buoyed by the relative strength of its banking and non-banking financial activities, claimed the Index’s top spot from the United States, which slipped to third position behind Australia largely due to poorer financial stability scores and a weakened banking sector. Hong Kong ranked 5th in the index, the Netherlands 8th.

Two-thirds of passenger flights between Hong Kong and Taiwan would be replaced by direct cross-strait flights following full implementation of the "three direct links" between the mainland and Taiwan, a study by a policy think-tank has concluded. The study by the Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre also estimated that full implementation of the links would result in a 50 per cent reduction in air freight between Hong Kong and Taiwan. But the five-month study, which was released yesterday, projected Hong Kong's annual gross domestic product would grow by an additional 0.94 of a percentage point - or HK$643 billion - by 2038 if the city formed a common market with the mainland and Taiwan.

Hong Kong celebrates Food and Wine Year

Hong Kong has recently become only the second Asian city to be awarded its very own Michelin guide. Moreover, following the abolition of all duty on wine in February 2008, Hong Kong has become the first duty free wine port among major economies, with year-on-year imports shooting up by 80% from March to December 2008. To toast these achievements and Hong Kong's rich gastronomic heritage, the Hong Kong Tourism Board has launched the Hong KongFood and Wine Year, featuring a sparkling array of events throughout the year, in which wine will be paired with Chinese cuisine. Between April 2009 and March 2010, around 2,000 restaurants, popular tourist attractions and famous dining districts, as well as more than 25 renowned local gourmets, will spread the message and show to the world the diverse culinary experience of Hong Kong, reinforcing the city’s image as one of the world's culinary capitals. One of the year’s highlights will be the Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival from 30 October until 8 November , featuring a three-day food and wine celebration at the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade. There will also be 'Wine and Dine Carnivals' in the popular dining districts of Lan Kwai Fong and Soho on Hong Kong Island.

This will enable the Ceres Paragon Terminal to better present itself as an independent player to shipping companies. HPH also owns the ECT terminal in Rotterdam. This development is part of a wider trend toward closer cooperation between the Ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. Another recent initiative along these lines is the Port Community system, which was jointly set up by both ports.

As air traffic rises, regional hub is ready

The Asia-Pacific region led global air travel in 2006, a year in which a record 4.4 billion international passengers travelled. Hong Kong International Airport's (HKIA) share of this growth strengthens year on year, accounting for an extra 7.4 per cent of passengers (45.8 million) and 2.8 per cent more cargo throughput (3.6 million tones). The results highlight Hong Kong's effectiveness in the increasingly competitive global air transport market, and reaffirm the city's position as a regional and international air logistics hub.
